DO NOT PUT THIS IN YOUR CAR Amazon Echo Auto Review UK

5 Reasons the Amazon Echo Auto is The WORST Smart Home gadget that Amazon have ever released. DO NOT PUT THIS IN YOUR CAR.

If you’re thinking about buying the Amazon Echo Auto for Navigation or Spotify then it will probably work 8 times out of 10 but it will depend on whether you have a stereo that it works with. I have issues with the Echo auto when paired with my VW Golf factory fitted stereo when using my Motorola phone, but the Echo Auto works just fine if I use my Galaxy S10, or a different speaker! It’s been badly implemented by Amazon and I’ve sadly gone back to the google assistant on my phone.

More importantly though you are going to get fed up with disconnecting and reconnecting cables to the degree that you will either leave it in your car on show to burglars, or you will simply give up carrying it around with you. If you’re looking to add Alexa to your car then many Motorola phones come with Alexa built in these days and although the Echo auto has a better array microphone the other issues aren’t worth living with.

Morning all! Usual disclaimer, I don’t hate Amazon, I don’t even hate this product, I just think there are things they could have done better, and in my case it is entirely useless because of it’s poor implementation. I’m sure for a lot of people it’s been great, and I have no disagreements about its microphones, they’re phenomenal, I just wish it worked properly with my phone, and I wish it didn’t have that sh*t eating grin ?

Ive stopped using amazon music in my car because the app keeps crashing. I tried it on 3 different phones including iphone 11 pro and the app still crashes.

  3. 52elk says:

Hello I bought this same thing I went to the app and they say no longer works how do I get an upgrade on the App Store thank you Larry

  4. Chris Townsend says:

I find it hard to laugh with you about the price of things and how pointless some gadgets are while you sit in a room with 3 (possibly 4) monitors that are linked to a quite obvious gaming pc which undoubtedly costs more than an average laptop or desktop, all the while being surrounded by expensive film ornaments and memorabilia which, let’s be honest, really serves no purpose. I’d like to one day see a video of a normal person with a normal salary and normal things in a normal review items that are actually affordable and not a laughable purchase. Sorry for this rant I’m sure you’re a nice guy but think about it for one second.

  5. Simon Conquest says:

    A number of things:

Are others having the issues you are? No? Then I would suggest that if you can get the Echo Auto to work correctly in your car then it is user error. I was away at the weekend are drove over 250 miles. No issues here. Maybe have a search on YouTube to find a video on how to use it. Just a suggestion.

The Echo Show 5 is currently £60 because it’s discounted (from £80) as a new device is being announced this week. I paid less that £40 for mine. Worth the money as I don’t have to touch my phone.

You don’t have to use the stand. Mine is tucked away on the centre console. I cannot see it and it still works fine.

Yes Amazon could enable the voice assistant on the app but not sure that helps people like me who keep their home in their pocket. Or if you kept your phone in your handbag.

Finally if the mount was made so it could power the Echo Auto it would massively increase the price of the unit. So unnecessary. Does anyone make a phone mount with a chargeable battery? No.

It’s a shame you focus on the perceived negatives of the Echo Auto – rather than positives. I think it’s a good bit of kit. But then it’s not for everyone.

  6. Neil Fellows says:

It bugs me that the Auto has been out for AGES in the US and when we finally get it, there’s still a mountain of bugs. What have Amazon been doing for the last couple of years? My Auto rarely connects automatically to my iPhone 7 Plus when I enter the car, pain in the but. Great when it works. When.

  7. Karl Kavanagh says:

    Honestly I love it! ??
My cars head unit doesn’t have Bluetooth or a hands free, so this does everything I want, I don’t use the stand and never had any issues, very pleased ??

  8. Peter Smith says:

I have Alexa built into my car – it works fine but rarely use it. Pretty much the only thing I ask “Alexa, is my front door locked” when half way to work.

  9. Michal Veselovský says:

    Hi man, unrelated to video:

Some time ago, I saw you review some 3D repro system, which was basically box you should put in the middle of your room and it tried to bounce sound off walls to create ilusion of 3D sound… And for the life of me, I cant find it now 😀 Dont you happen to have a link to that vid? 😀

  10. Iain Bryden says:

I am happy with mine. I listen to audiobooks from my iPhone in a car that doesn’t have Bluetooth. Since the iPhone no longer has a headphone jack the Echo Auto serves as the interface. It instantly connects when I turn the car on (and the device gets power from the lighter).

  11. Richard Colbert says:

Thanks Paul for saying what I’ve known for years. I considered myself a pioneer of sorts when I put the original Echo Dot (ok, gen 2) in my car in 2015. Every time Amazon comes out with a new device, I shriek when I discover it’s ultimately just a bluetooth microphone (you have to pair it to the Alexa app on a phone, which does all the work). I now use an Echo Input in my car but find more and more each day that I don’t even want it. I only keep it to see (hear) what triggers it by “accident”… yesterday it was “Adamantium” (which was briefly kind of cool/funny).

  12. The Vulgar Alchemist says:

I have one, when it’s working, it’s nice to have hand free selection of music and some GPS requests. But EXTREMELY frustrating when she goes shy as shown at 10:00. Some times she’ll just light up at the wake word and never makes a sound. *sigh*

  13. The Vulgar Alchemist says:

I love the idea of saying “Alexa, take me to ____” and having the address sent to waze (or google maps). But, two issues frequently get in the way. 1) she doesn’t use any of my address books so I can’t say “Take me to Julia’s house”, so I end up trying to think of business near where I want to go – with 2) frustrating results.
Me: “Alexa, take me to the Wendys on Centre Ave in in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania”
Alexa Auto: “Would you like to go to the Wendys at 123 Main Street in Cleveland?”
    **sigh**

  14. Mark Harris says:

Mine works great with my spare Motorola G5s. When Alexa is connected to Spotify, it works great and better allows me to focus on driving, & that is a good thing.
$50 is too much, but mine was $30 last year. It is a worthwhile product if it works well.
Mine sits discreetly above my mirror and is barely noticeable.

  15. Earl Kleese says:

When it works, I love it. WHEN IT WORKS. That sometimes requires unplugging, replugging multiple times, opening the Alexa app on the phone, closing it, re-opening it, holding my phone with my left hand, pinkie out at a 45 degree angle to the Northwest, or some other preposterous thing. I think it needs some serious attention to become what it needs to be.

  16. TechnoCritter says:

I had some of the same problems. I asked Alexa to call my wife and she says that Skype isn’t available. I DON’T WANT TO USE SKYPE! CALL MY WIFE! It’s in a box in the garage now.

  17. Chip Linck Griffin says:

I got one early for $25, and that was overpriced. It should have been half the size. It’s just a way to use Alexa on your phone. Microphones with no speaker since it uses your car audio. It should have been really cheap. It works most of the time. I did find that it would loose its mind sometimes, and I’d have to pull the power and restart it. I liked it while I was using it. Mostly, I’d control music with it, but I could also run automations when I left or came home. I could also make an announcement when I was coming home to let everybody know. I do not mount items to my air vents. I have always hated that. I just placed it in the tray on my center console. I would have preferred to mount it high, but I didn’t want to run the cable for it. In the end, I don’t use it anymore, because I have an Echo Loop. Does the same thing, and my car looks cleaner without anything sitting there with a cable coming out of it.

I loved it when I got it, but it should be cheaper, and smaller. The loop works better, and I don’t have to say Alexa, just push a button on my finger. Having said that, what Amazon really needs to do is make an app for the Galaxy Watch. That would be better than either the Loop or the Auto. I found 2 third party apps for Galaxy Watch, and they both suck. If you don’t want the Loop, and want an Echo in your car, this is not a bad option, just overpriced.

  18. Gary_F says:

You’re so funny, Paul. I think we could throw any random object at you, like a cabbage, and you’d still produce a really entertaining review. I don’t understand the purpose of the Echo Auto. The Alexa app works just fine on my phone inside my car if I want to listen to Amazon Music or if I need to ask how old is Holly Willoughby. What more do you want in life? 🙂
